John Lawrence crowned Midland Senior Amateur Champion

John Lawrence (Sutton Coldfield) crowned Midland Senior Amateur Champion at Wollaton Park with 3 under par 68 to hold off the challenge of runner up Brendon Moss (Woburn) on 69 and 2024 Midland Senior Amateur Champion Steve Sansome (Rothley Park) on 70. Staffordshire players took the next three places with David Westwood (Little Aston) on level par 71, Paul Griffiths (Enville), Martin Davies Sandwell Park), Stuart McCarthy (Erewash Valley), Mark Betteridge (Coxmoor), Roger Neale (Hallmark The Welcome) and Robert Aston (Greenway Hall) all tied for 5th place on 72. Best Nett of the day was also the Champion, John Lawrence (67). Brendon Moss, Wollaton Park’s Dave Smedley and Midland Senior Spring Champion Steve Slater (Shrewsbury) all tied for 2nd nett. Stuart McCarthy finished 5th on 69 with 6 more players all one shot further back on 70 sharing 6th place. Paul Dean (Rothley Park), Martin Davies, Mark Betteridge, Roger Neale, Steve Fretwell (Serlby Park) and Phil Dyke (Bromsgrove) all breaking nett par.

Accepting the Midland Senior Amateur Championship Salver, John Lawrence paid tribute to the hard work of the entire green keeping team at Wollaton Park for the excellent preparation and presentation of the course. He also thanked the rest of the management team at the club for their warm welcome and excellent service throughout the day.

Midland Golf Union President, Alan Duggins, thanked the Directors and members of the club for allowing the Midland Golf Union to hold the championship at Wollaton Park.

The win for John Lawrence means an automatic place for the Midland Seniors team to play the SWCGA at Luffenham Heath on 3rd October. As the final stages of the Senior Order of Merit approaches places for the team are hotting up with the top 8 in line for selection.
