The Southwest Counties Golf Association triumphed over the Midland Golf Union at Redditch Golf Club finishing with a 11 – 4 victory in a tight match, played to a high standard, on a well-prepared course which had to cope with torrential rain during the latter part of the afternoon singles.
The morning foursomes were keenly contested with the Midlands Team edging in front through the front nine, however the Southwest players fought back in the latter holes to edge in front by 3 to 2 from the morning session. Wins for Jake Phillips & Brandon Skidmore (SWCGA) over Levi Desmond & Dani Hoof and Andrew Isaacs & Curtis Edwards (SWCGA) over Ryan Genner & Jordan Darnell set the scene. Torin Little & Jensen Parfitt (MGU) tied with the Millington brothers, Ashley and Joshua. The same half was recorded by Alex Emms & James Stenhouse (MGU) against Jack Jeffery & Pete Howell. The only MGU victory in the morning came from the Warwickshire pairing of Cameron Bridger & Joel Smith over Freddie Titcombe & Lewy Hayward.
The afternoon singles saw a similar pattern emerging to the foursomes with the advantage at the turn suggesting the Midland Team would hold sufficient matches in their favour to retain the trophy. However, it was not to be, and a surge by the Southwest team with victories for Jake Phillips over Levi Desmond, Brandon Skidmore over Dani Hoof and Ashley Millington over Torin Little. The first two matches by the narrow margin of just 1 up, but Ashley finished his match by the 16th green.
Jensen Parfitt held off the challenge of Pete Howell to win 1 up but the tide of Southwest wins continued in the next 5 matches and the final win of the day for Alex Emms was only a consolation as the match was over by this point, with the Southwest team recording their highest winning margin in an away fixture since the matches began in 1925.
In the end it was a comprehensive and well-deserved win for the Southwest Counties to reverse the advantage the Midland Team had held for the last four encounters.
